Vanguard University shuts out Columbia (Mo.) College 2-0at 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship

DECATUR, Ala. - Kelsey Boyer tossed a three-hit shutout as Vanguard University blanked Columbia (Mo.) College 2-0 in pool-play action at the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship Saturday (May 19) afternoon at Wilson Morgan Park.

The No. 8 Lions improved to 41-15 overall and to 2-1 in Pool B while the Cougars fall to 29-18 and 0-3. Both teams wrap up pool play later today. Vanguard will play Simon Fraser University at 5 p.m. while Columbia will face Lee University at 7:30 p.m.

The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Jennifer Olvera's RBI single to score Rachel Bomgren, who reached on a walk. Vanguard added an insurance run in the third. Bomgren, who went 2-for-2, led off with a double to left-center field. She moved over third on a stolen base and scored on an error by catcher Stephanie Stowe.

Boyer (11-3) allowed three singles and struck out six for the Lions. Katie McMahon (17-11) took the loss.
