Trevecca Nazarene University gets past Shorter College 5-2 at 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship

 

DECATUR, Ala. - Trevecca Nazarene University banged out 11 hits as they defeated Shorter College 5-2 in Pool C at the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship Friday (May 18) afternoon at the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship.

 

The fifth-ranked Trojans improved to 57-8 overall and to 2-0 within Pool C while the ninth-ranked Hawks fell to 43-10 and 0-1. Trevecca Nazarene will return to action at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 19) against Houston Baptist University while Shorter will face Thomas (Ga.) University at 8 p.m. tonight.

 

TNU jumped on Shorter starter Elisabeth Barber (22-4) for two unearned runs in the first inning as they took advantage of two errors. The Trojans added another run on Ashley McCool's RBI single in the second before Shorter rallied for two runs in the third on RBI hits by Jessica Sanders and Lakyn Newton.

 

Trevecca Nazarene added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pitcher Brittiany Johnson (40-5), who went 2-for-4, helped her own cause with an RBI double to left before Jennifer Perkins, who went 2-for-4, added a run-scoring single through the right-side of the infield.

 

Leadoff hitter Chelsea Bailey went 3-for-4 for the Trojans.
