Mobile Defeats Virginia Wise

University of Mobile takes 11-2 victory over University of Virginia's College at Wise at 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship

 

DECATUR, Ala. - The University of Mobile registered its first win of the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship as they defeated the University of Virginia's College at Wise 11-2 in five innings Friday (May 18) afternoon at Wilson Morgan Park.

 

The No. 12 Rams improved to 36-15 overall and to 1-1 in Pool A while the Cavaliers fell to 32-25 and 0-2. Both teams will be in action Saturday (May 19). Mobile will face California Baptist University at 9 a.m. while Virginia-Wise will tangle with the Savannah College of Art and Design at 11:30 a.m.

 

Mobile took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jennifer Gomez, who went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, drove in the first run with a single and later scored on a passed ball. Virginia-Wise rallied to tie the game in the third on Amber Harvey's two-run single down the left field line.

 

The Rams blew the game open with a five-run third. Gomez drove in the go-ahead run in the third on a bases-loaded walk off starter Lauren Sneed (15-10). Taylor Phillips, who went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, added a run-scoring single in the third while Krystin Jolly added a sacrifice fly. Yaicey Sojo, who went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, drove in two more with a single to center.

 

Nikki Madden (15-8) tossed a two-hitter in the win.
