OLATHE, Kan. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has released its pool play assignments and pool play schedule for the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship, scheduled for May 18-23 in Decatur, Ala., at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.
Each qualifying team will play four games in pool-play competition, with the best two records from each of the four pools moving on to double-elimination bracket play, which begins Monday, May 21. Twenty games are on the schedule on four fields at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex on Friday, while 20 more games complete pool play on Saturday.
Sunday, May 20 will serve as an off-day in the tournament, with bracket play beginning on May 21. Last season, Mobile (Ala.) went 4-0 in pool play before winning four-straight games in double-elimination play, culminating in a 4-1 win over California Baptist for the 2006 NAIA Softball National Championship.
Mobile begins defense of its title Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Savannah Art & Design (Ga.), who enters the tournament after winning the Region XIV tournament title last week. California Baptist, last season's runner up, will get a rematch with Mobile in pool competition at 9 a.m. Saturday, as the Lancers begin poll play Friday at 9 a.m. against Virginia-Wise.
One of the NAIA's most storied softball programs - Oklahoma City - is also in this season's 20-team field, beginning its tournament in Pool B with a Noon game on Friday against Vanguard (Calif.). Oklahoma City has recorded the most appearances in NAIA Championship History (20), as well as claiming records for the most all-time tournament wins (78) and most consecutive tournament wins (14), an achievement that was accomplished twice by the stars between 1994-96 and 2000-02.
