SCAD's Kelly Blasts Two With Bases Loaded as Bees Split with Northwood (Fla.)

March 31, 2007

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Brittany Kelley swatted two grand slams as the No. 7 Savannah College of Art and Design softball team defeated Northwood (Fla.) University 9-0 (five innings) in the second game of their Florida Sun Conference doubleheader Friday (March 30) afternoon at the Paulson Softball Complex. The Seahawks won the opener 13-5 as they took advantage of nine SCAD errors.

The Bees fell to 22-1 overall and to 7-1 in the Florida Sun while Northwood improved to 17-17 and 4-4. SCAD returns to action Saturday (March 31) with a noon doubleheader at Paulson against St. Thomas (Fla.) University.

SCAD took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap as Kelley, a junior infielder from Lawrenceville, Ga., started the rally with a single to left-center field and moved to second on a ground out. Kelley then stole third before coming home on a wild pitch from Kendall Brooks.

A double by Cristina Morgado, a single by Kayla Tom and a hit batsman by Kristen Curette loaded the bases in the third before Kelley connected on her first homer to left-center field and gave the Bees a 5-0 lead. It was more of the same in the fourth as Morgado and Tom singled before Curette was hit by another pitch to load the bases. Kelley, who has hit four homers in 2007, cleared the bases with a blast to center field to push the lead out to 9-0.

Tom's two grand slams tied the NAIA record held by Oklahoma City University's Cat Calvert, who set the standard during the 2006 season against Oklahoma Christian University.

Meghan Temple (8-0) struck out five and allowed just two hits for the Bees.

The Seahawks handed the Bees their first lost of the season as they rallied for nine runs in the seventh inning of the opener. Northwood, which entered the seventh trailing 5-4 after SCAD scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on a RBI single by Curette, scored its runs on just six hits as the Bees committed five of their season-high nine errors in the seventh.

After three infield singles loaded the bases to start the seventh, Northwood took the lead for good at 6-5 on a two-run single by Erin Lambros, who also a two-run homer in the fourth and pitched a complete game. Reliever Alex Alcott (2-1) absorbed the loss for the Bees.
