#4 Simon Fraser def. Bethel 15-0
The defending champion and fourth-seeded Simon Fraser University (B.C.) flexed its muscle early in pool play with a 15-0 win against Bethel College (Tenn.).  The Clan tallied seven runs in the second inning, five runs in the third, and the added three more in the fifth inning.  Melanie Matthews and Christine Barr each recorded three hits in the game with Becca Hartley leading the way with three RBI, including a home run.  All but one starter for SFU recorded at least one hit, while eight players in the lineup recorded at least one RBI.  The Clan boasted 17 hits on the day.  Jennifer Schreyer (14-1) earned the win with a five inning performance, allowing just two hits and no runs.  Ashton McFarland (8-4) took the loss after allowing 10 runs, five earned, in 2.1 innings.  Paige Cooper allowed five runs in 2.2 innings pitched in relief.

#5 St. Gregory's def. Valley City State 3-0
St. Gregory's University (Okla.), seeded #5, topped Valley City State University (N.D.) 3-0 in day one of pool play.  Both teams played a scoreless first four and a half innings until the Lady Cavaliers of St. Gregory's broke loose for two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Sarah Smith.  A solo home run by Nicole Tindall in the bottom of the sixth for the Lady Cavaliers capped off the scoring at 3-0.  Sharon Bell earned the win with a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out 16 batters.  Karalea Morris (21-8) took the loss as she allowed three runs and five hits in six innings pitched.  Morris tallied seven strikeouts in the loss.

Trevecca Nazarene def. #4 Simon Fraser 7-3
Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) recorded the tournament's first upset as the Trojans defeated fourth seed and defending national champion Simon Fraser University (B.C.) 7-3.  Trevecca Nazarene (44-12) took a quick lead with two unearned runs in the top of the first sparked by RBI singles by Ashley McCool and Maria Trapani.  Simon Fraser (29-4) answered with an unearned run with a RBI single by Erin McLean.  Trevecca Nazarene added its third run in the top of the third inning, with SFU answering in the bottom of the frame with two runs to tie the game.  The score remained tied until Trevecca broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-3.  Trevecca Nazarene was led by Ashley McCool , Brittany Johnson, and Maria Trapani with three hits each.  Trapani and Evyn Terry each recorded two RBI in the game.  Brittany Johnson (32-8) tossed a complete game in the win as she allowed three runs on just two hits while striking out nine batters.  Melissa Oddie (15-3) allowed seven runs and 10 hits over seven innings in a losing effort.

Bethel def. #5 St. Gregory's 2-1
Bethel College (Tenn.) posted the second upset of day one with a 2-1 win over #5 St. Gregory's University (Okla.) with a 2-1 victory.  St. Gregory's tallied a run in the top of the first, but couldn't hold the lead as the Wildcats of Bethel answered with two runs in the bottom of the second.  Meaghan Morris (10-5) made that 2-1 lead hold as she tossed six straight scoreless innings to finish the complete game, two-hit performance.  In the first, St. Gregory's run came on a solo homerun by Sarah Smith, however, St. Gregory would manage only one more hit for the game.  Bethel's two runs in the second came when Sarah Wright reached with a leadoff walk.  After Jessica Greene struck out, Brandi Scroggins popped a two-run homer to centerfield to give Bethel the lead they would not lose.  Sharon Bell (35-10) took the hard luck loss as she went the distance, allowing just two runs on one hit while striking out 10 batters.

Trevecca Nazarene def. Valley City State 2-0
The Trevecca Nazarene University Lady Trojans (Tenn.) completed its opening day of pool play with a 2-0 win against Valley State University (N.D.).  Trevecca Nazarene (45-12) remains the only perfect team in Pool D as both seeded teams lost once on Friday.  Trevecca Nazarene was paced by Brittany Johnson (33-8) who tossed a complete game three-hitter while striking out 16 batters.  Karalea Morris (21-9) of Valley City State took a tough loss, allowing just two runs on five hits in her six inning of work.  Ashley McCool led the way offensively for Trevecca Nazarene with a 2-for-3 night.  Trevecca Nazarene scored a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Chelsea Bailey and another run in th
