Recap of Day One of the 2025 NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field
MARION, Ind. [RESULTS] - The first day of the 2025 NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship saw three individual champions crowned.
Twelve preliminary events took place on day one, including: 4x100m relay, 1500m, 400m hurdles, 200m, 4x800m relay and 3000m steeplechase.
DECATHLON
The outdoor track and field decathlon event concluded on day one with Holden Van Poppel, a freshman from Siena Heights (Mich.), leading the way with a total score of 3829 points. Van Poppel secured first place in the shot put (13.70m) and high jump (1.99m), and finished second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.97 seconds.
Justin Krabbenhoft, a senior from Eastern Oregon, claimed the second spot with 3786 points. Krabbenhoft excelled in the long jump, achieving the best mark of 6.84m, and demonstrated consistent performance across other events, including a third-place finish in the 400m with a time of 49.79 seconds.
TRACK
The 10,000m race was the final event of the day one.
Luca Madeo from Cumberlands (Ky.), a sophomore, emerged victorious with a time of 30:12.05. Madeo demonstrated remarkable consistency and speed, maintaining the lead from the 1200m mark and finishing strong despite a slight slowdown in the final 400m. His splits were impressive, with several sub-1:12 laps, highlighting his dominance throughout the race.
Eli Fullerton from Indiana Wesleyan, a senior, secured second place with a time of 30:24.60. Fullerton started strong, maintaining a top-three position for most of the race. Despite dropping to sixth place around the 19:39.7 mark, he made a remarkable comeback in the final kilometers, finishing with a blistering 1:01.3 in the last 400m, the fastest final lap among the top finishers.
Bett Kennedy, a freshman from Cumberland (Tenn.), finished third with a time of 30:26.32. Kennedy's performance was notable for his steady climb through the ranks, moving from 24th place at the 2000m mark to consistently holding the second position from the 13:34.3 mark until the final stretch, where he finished third.
Hayden Bostrom and Daniel Butler, both seniors from the College of Idaho, finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Bostrom, who initially led the race, fell back but managed to maintain a strong pace, finishing with a time of 30:27.99. Butler showed a consistent performance, staying within the top ten throughout the race and finishing with a time of 30:29.15.
HAMMER
In a competitive hammer throw event, Mason Darden from Madonna (Mich.) emerged victorious with a remarkable throw of 64.46 meters (211-6.00 feet), securing the top spot. Darden recorded his best throw in the first attempt.
Christian Rios from Marian (Ind.) closely followed in second place with a throw of 64.41 meters (211-4.00 feet). Rios's best throw came in his second attempt.
JAVELIN
Theo Manuel from British Columbia emerged as the standout performer, securing first place with a remarkable throw of 63.45 meters (208-2.00). Manuel's winning throw came in his first attempt, setting the tone for the rest of the competition.
Reuben Hornby from Carroll (Mont.) claimed second place with a best throw of 61.43 meters (201-6.00), achieved on his third attempt. Hornby demonstrated a solid series of throws, with his performance peaking in the middle of the competition.
Martynas Bajarunas, a freshman from British Columbia, took third place with a throw of 61.14 meters (200-7.00). Bajarunas showed promise with a strong third attempt.
The top eight finishers in each event are NAIA All-Americans.
The second day of the championship will open with the remainder of the decathlon events at 9 a.m. CT/10 a.m. ET and starting with the 110m hurdles.
