Day Two NAIA Men’s Indoor Track & Field National Championship

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Friday’s schedule at the 57th annual NAIA Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship included nine different running events and crowned six titles at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

  • Midland (Neb.) holds a slight edge over Bethel (Ind.) and Doane (Neb.) after the second day of the NAIA Men’s Indoor Track & Field National Championship.  Midland scored 17 points after six events, while Bethel and Doane each scored 16 points.  Eastern Oregon sits in fourth place in the team standings with 14 points. 
  • Dean Freitag of Rio Grande (Ohio) claimed the first NAIA men’s indoor individual national title of the 2022 event in the 3000-meter race walk Friday.  Freitag, who finished third in last year’s 3000-meter race walk, hit a time of 12 minutes, 33.03 seconds.  He became the third Rio Grande student-athlete to capture the men’s individual indoor track national title in school history. 
  • TJ Davis of Eastern Oregon maintained his lead and captured the heptathlon national title after piling up 5,439 points.  He became the second EOU individual to win the heptathlon national title in school history since Robbie Haynie won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. 
  • Five weight throwers from the Great Plains Athletic Conference placed in the top eight, led by Midland’s (Neb.) who repeated the national title.  He tossed 20.91 meters (68 feet, 7.25 inches) to claim the title, improving his previous national title mark of 20.29 meters in 2021. 
  • After Oklahoma City won both heats in Thursday’s 3000-meters semifinals, the Stars also won both heats in the 1-mile run.  Zouhair Talbi won the first heat in 4 minutes, 13.53 seconds.  His teammate Shimales Abebe captured the second heat with a time of 4:14.03. 
  • Both Abebe and Talbi ran in the 3000-meter run semifinals for Oklahoma City, securing another spot in Saturday’s finals.  Omar Paramo of St. Francis (Ill.) recorded the top time in 8:29.21. 
  • Glenn Rodgers clocked the top time in the 60-meter hurdles semifinals in 7.96 seconds.  Defending champion Brandon Schultz of Brewton-Parker (Ga.) was second in 7.98 seconds. 
  • Ben Jefferies of Briar Cliff (Iowa), who won the 400-meter dash national title last year, finished second in the semifinals with a time of 47.78 seconds.  Cortez Cunningham hit the fastest time of 47.41 seconds. 
  • Two-time defending men’s 600-meter run champion Reggie Mouton secured a spot in Saturday’s final after clocking a time of 1:19.54 (sixth place).  Jacob Ulrich produced the fastest time in 1:18.98. 
  • Shanon Rietzell of Midland held on to repeat the men’s high jump national title after clearing the height of 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.75 inches).  He owned the tiebreaker over Tony Kinser of Southwestern (Kan.) after a successful first attempt (Kinser made a successful 2.10 meters’ clearance on his second attempt). 
  • Drew Thornton of Marian (Ind.) edged Clayton VanDyke of Lewis-Clark (Idaho) for the fastest time in the 800-meter run semifinals by .07 seconds. 
  • Indiana Tech secured three men’s sprinters in Saturday’s finals in the 200-meter dash. 
  • The final running event on day two wrapped up with Indiana Wesleyan rallying back for their first men’s 4x800-meter relay national title in school history.  The Wildcats edged Dordt (Iowa) in a thrilling race by .07 seconds (IWU with a time of 7:33.93, followed by DC with a time of 7:34.00). 
  • Thomas Jackson of Bethel (Ind.) captured back-to-back men’s long jump title, leaping 7.74 meters (25 feet, 4.75 inches) on his very first attempt.  He improved his previous national title mark of 7.34 meters. 

There will be a total of 15 national titles to be crowned on Saturday.  The final day of the national men’s indoor track & field meet kicks off at 12:35 p.m. with the 1-mile run. 

The men’s field events are set to start at 2 pm. with the shot-put, pole vault at 1:15 p.m., and triple jump at 1:30 p.m.
