William Penn’s Second-Half Finishes Extend Upset Trend in National Tournament

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - William Penn (12-5-4) handed previously unbeaten Oklahoma Wesleyan (19-1-3) its first loss of the season on Tuesday afternoon, continuing the upset trend that has shaped the week in Orange Beach. After a tightly played opening half that concluded at 0-0, the Statesmen found their stride after the break and rode a composed second-half effort to a 2-0 victory.

The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Hector Bastos finished off a setup from Matias Meijide to put William Penn in front. From there, the Statesmen controlled much of the rhythm, keeping OKWU from finding its usual attacking groove.

WPU added the dagger in the 88th minute as Sven Henneberg buried the insurance goal on an assist from Jaime Rozalen, sealing the result and closing the door on any late rally from the Eagles.

The Statesmen finished with an 8-6 edge in total shots, while goalkeeper Ryan Walsh-Rowe turned away all four attempts he faced to secure the clean sheet. OKWU keeper Marko Rodic made two saves in the match.

William Penn will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. against the winner of the John Brown (Ark.) and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) contest.
