Men’s Soccer National Championship - Semifinals Recap

DECATUR, Ala. – [Bracket Schedule] And then there were two. Keiser (Fla.) and Mobile (Ala.) won their semifinal matchups on Saturday at Jack Allen Soccer Complex. They will compete again on Monday for the Red Banner. in the 63rd Annual NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. The Seahawks knocked off the top seed in the tournament Central Methodist (Mo.) by a 4-1 count; Mobile (Ala.) bested Columbia (Mo.) by a 2-1 score. 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

  • Keiser (Fla.) and Mobile (Ala.) swill meet in the championship game Monday at 2:00 CST on ESPN3.
  • Mobile last was in the final game in 2012 and won it all in 2002.
  • The Seahawks are in the championship contest for the first time in program history.
  • Central Methodist's undefeated run ends (22-1-0). Columbia's journey ends in the semifinals for the third straight year. 

No. 5 Keiser (Fla.) defeats No. 1 Central Methodist (Mo.)

  • Central Methodist’s run as the highest ranked team in the country came to the end in the semifinals as Keiser decidedly beat the Eagles 4-1. The perfect season comes to an end as CMU is handed its only loss of the year.
  • The Seahawks got things started in the 16th minute as the ball was served to the far by Jack Casey post off a CMU foul. Nicholas Akoto redirected it to the other side of the goal where Charlie Hennen launched it into the net.
  • Central Methodist took advantage of a defensive miscue in the box by Keiser, tying the score at 21:46.
  • After the CMU goal, the energy in the stadium decidedly switched to the Eagles. Then, in a matter of seconds the Seahawks were once again leading. Keiser keeper Dario Salzer kicked the ball from just outside the box and it hit the turf, wet from the rain. As the ball skipped past all defenders, Kael Richards poked it past the keeper and then touched it into the goal.
  • Kieser threatened to go up by two scores, but Aaron Hoffman made two incredible saves as he was sprawled out on the turf. Three minutes later, Alvaro Jimenez fed the ball to the left side of the field where Hannu Tam chipped the ball over the keeper to take a 3-1 edge.
  • Spirited play continued by the Seahawks as the game wound inside the final five minutes to go in regulation. With the Eagles needing to press higher and higher to try and score, CMU keeper ‘s was well outside the box allowing Tam to launch one in from about 35 yards out, his second of the game.
  • In all, Central Methodist took 20 shots, compared to 12 for the Seahawks, but only five of them were on target. The Eagles recorded a 7-2 margin in corner kicks taken as well as being whistled for six more fouls.

No. 3 Mobile (Ala.) defeats No. 7 Columbia (Mo.)

  • A textbook cross from Joshua Bynoe to the 18-yard box to the opposite post gave Alejo Binaghi an easy touch in for the game’s first goal.
  • Mobile would hold on to the 1-nil lead through the halftime intermission.
  • Just prior to 10 minutes gone in the second half, Columbia found the equalizer. Aaron Hernandez got the play in motion by launching it from his center back position, targeting Erik Rajoy at the top of the Rams 18-yard box. After it was redirected, Nathan Durdle found himself in the right place, at the right time, to squeeze it inside the near post.
  • The tied contest held for the next 23 minutes until Angel Almiron drew a corner kick. Sebastian Jorgge served it up and found the dome of Rodrigo Paredes – who put it into the back of the net, giving the Rams the lead once again.
  • After the goal, the Cougars began to press trying to tie the game for a second time. However, the Mobile would not concede any shots on goal as all three attempts by Columbia were blocked before making their way to Rams keeper Antoine Bedos.
  • Columbia held a 7-4 margin in corner kicks taken, while Mobile outshot their opponent 16-8. The Cougars managed two shots on goal; The Rams posted nearly as many shots on goal (7) as Columbia had in total shots. Liam Gibbs saved five of the seven shots he faced for the Columbia Cougars.
