Men’s Soccer National Championship - Day Two Recap

DECATUR, Ala. – [Bracket | Schedule] As the Quarterfinal Round of the 63rd Annual Men's Soccer National Championship began at Jack Allen Soccer Complex, it was the most action packed day on the pitch with four contests played. The eight remaining teams battle with a berth in the 2021 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Semifinals on the line. 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

  • Keiser (Fla.) and Columbia (Mo.) secured upsets to move on to the Semifinals
  • Four teams had their seasons conclude today, ending their pursuit of a Red Banner
  • The reigning NAIA National Champion was defeated in the Quarterfinals

No. 5 Keiser (Fla.) defeats No. 4 Missouri Valley 3-1

  • The battle of the middle seeds was a tale of two halves
  • Missouri Valley hit the scoreboard first as Timo Dekker found the back of the net 26:19
  • Exiting the halftime intermission, it took less than a minute for the Seahawks to record the equalizer
  • As the squads were going back and forth, Keiser broke through with the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute. The play was set up by Alejandro Varela Sabio and finished by Elias Jassim.
  • Just three minutes later an insurance goal was scored by Luca Malvicini, assisted by Nicholas Akoto.
  • Despite the difference on the scoreboard, the Vikings outshot the Seahawks 16-4 in total, but the key difference was KU’s 10-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Keiser keeper Dario Salzer stopped three shots while Dusan Milosevic saved seven for the Vikings.
  • The Seahawks reach the Semifinals for the first time in program history, in their eighth appearance.
  • Missouri Valley played Keiser to a 2-2 draw in the National quarterfinal round back in May, and advanced by winning the penalty kick shootout, 5-4.

No. 1 Central Methodist (Mo.) defeats No. 8 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 2-0

  • MidAmerica Nazarene defended for their lives, and succeeded for the first 61 minutes of the game.
  • Alessandro Salvadego drove deep in into the box on the left side and ended up drawing a goal, much to the dismay of the Pioneers.
  • MNU kept fighting, but the onslaught from the Eagles overtook them as Theo Klein gave CMU a 2-nil advantage.
  • In all, Central Methodist outshot the Pioneers 23-7 and held an 11-3 difference in corner kicks drawn.
  • MidAmerica Nazarene keeper Enzo Carvalho stopped eight shots, while his counterpart only had to stop a pair for the Eagles.
  • Central Methodist is looking to earn its third title in four years, with defending NAIA National Champion Missouri Valley eliminated.

No. 7 Columbia (Mo.) defeats No. 2 Oklahoma Wesleyan 2-1

  • Putting the ball back in play by a thrown in, Charles Norman played give-and-go with Carter Redford who blasted a line drive from the right side into the back of the net.
  • Six minutes later, Joey Spotanski netted his second goal of the final site and ninth of the year.
  • The 2-0 lead for the Cougars continued into the 70th minute where Oklahoma Wesleyan’s sense of urgency increased greatly.
  • Columbia was whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box at the 74:34 mark. Stefan Lukic took the free kick for the Eagles and cut the deficit in half.
  • Clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Cougars found themselves 10 minutes from the Semifinals.
  • With only 35 seconds remaining, Liam Gibbs laid out to block an Eagles shot and preserve the victory – only his second needed on the game.
  • OKWU held a 15-7 difference in shots. Columbia only took one corner kick compared to five for the Eagles.
  • The Cougars upset Oklahoma Wesleyan, giving them only their second loss in over two months.

No. 3 Mobile (Ala.) ties No. 6 Indiana Tech - Advances 4-3 in PK's

  • As the final game of the evening began to take shape, the entire stadium knew a knock-out, drag-out fight was developing.
  • A winner could not be decided after 110 minutes of game action, bringing a best of five PK shootout to the forefront.
  • Indiana Tech went first and missed right; Alejo Binaghi scored for Mobile.
  • Flipping the script, this time Malte Dennert tied it for the Warriors while the Rams missed.
  • In the third round, both teams made it bringing it to a 2-2 tie.
  • Antoine Bedos came up with a massive save diving to his right for Mobile.
  • With all the pressure mounting, Pep Casas was smooth in his ability to net things at 3-3 and dive his team a chance to keep the shootout going.
  • In one swift motion, Sebastian Jorgge ended Indiana Tech’s season in heartbreak.
  • All in, Bedos only had one save but it was massive. Meanwhile, Jaume Salvado was busy for the Warriors saving seven.
  • Mobile recorded 16 shots to 11 for the Warriors. Fouls were knotted at 9-9 and there was only a slight difference in corner kicks drawn.
