Cumberlands (Ky.) Uses Second Half Run to Pull Away from Indiana Tech

SAVANNAH, Ga. – [Bracket | Schedule] In a game of scoring runs, it was third-seed Cumberlands (Ky.) who utilized a six-goal second-half run to pull away and defeat No. 6 Indiana Tech 13-10 in the nightcap of the NAIA Quarterfinals, Wednesday night.  With the win, the Patriots advance to the National Semifinals and improve to 14-3 overall, while the Warriors close out their season with an 11-5 record.

Cumberlands struck first, winning the opening faceoff and netting a goal on the opening possession.  The Warriors evened the score a couple of minutes later, before back-to-back goals from the Patriots put Cumberlands in front 3-1 midway through the opening period.  Both defense kept up their tenacious efforts, making it difficult for either offense to get into a rhythm.  The two teams traded goals in the closing minutes of the quarter as the Patriots took a 4-2 lead.

The Warriors took advantage of Patriots' penalties, scoring a pair of man-up goals to tie the game at 4-4 with 7:49 remaining in the second quarter.  Gabe Schwaiger notched a pair of caused turnovers while a Mason Miller goal sparked a three-goal run for Cumberlands, making it a 7-4 lead at halftime.

Indiana Tech made some adjustments coming out of the break, and they paid off immediately, scoring four straight goals.  Jake Deacon netted a pair of goals, while Cam Fewster’s goal gave the Warriors their first lead of the game, 8-7, with 6:04 remaining.  The Patriots responded with a three-goal run of their own, sparked by a Nick Kava goal to put Cumberlands in front 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

Kava added two more goals as part of a three-goal Patriot run to open the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 13-8 with 9:12 remaining.  Indiana Tech netted two goals, while Nathan Foskey made four saves in the period for the 13-10 final.

The Patriots were led Kava, who netted four goals in the win, while Mason Miller chipped in a hat trick.  Nathan Foskey made 16 saves as Gabe Schwaiger notched five caused turnovers and eight ground balls in the win.

Kyle Twobulls made 18 saves and scooped six ground balls for Indiana Tech.  Deacon netted four goals while Josh Bramley added a pair of goals.  Zach Spisz tallied a team-best three caused turnovers in the game.

The victory propels Cumberlands into the semifinals, where they will face #7 Madonna, who won their quarterfinal game earlier.  The next round is scheduled for May 8 at 6 p.m. ET at Memorial Stadium as the quest for the championship title continues.
