Fast Start and Strong Finish Lifts #5 Concordia Past #4 Webber in the NAIA Quarterfinals
SAVANNAH, Ga. – [Bracket] In the second game of the 2025 NAIA Men's Lacrosse National Championship at Memorial Stadium, fifth-seed Concordia netted six first-half goals and chipped in five fourth-quarter goals to knock off #4 Webber 12-7. With the win, the Cardinals advance to the semifinals and improve to 12-5 overall, while the Warriors close out their season with a 13-3 record.
It was an intense game right from the opening whistle as Concordia won the faceoff and Nick Bradford netted an unassisted goal 17 seconds into the game. The two teams traded goals over the next few minutes as Concordia remained in front 2-1 midway through the first quarter. Webber looked for the equalizer as they fired six shots, however, a save and a deflection off the crossbar kept the score 2-1. The Cardinals added a late goal from Andrew Simmons, while Joseph Loria made a save in the closing seconds of the period to make it a 3-1 game.
The second quarter began as a defensive battle as the two teams traded goals giving Concordia a 4-2 advantage with 2:43 remaining. The Cardinals netted a pair of goals, both out of a timeout, with the final one coming with five second left to give Concordia a 6-2 lead at the break.
The Cardinals made a save in the opening minute of the third quarter, while Ryan Davis put a well-placed shot into the cage to extend their lead to 7-2 with 12:21 remaining. Webber started to rally with a man-up goal from Jeremiah Loo, which sparked a four-goal run for the Warriors to pull within one at 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.
After a short weather delay, the teams took the field for the fourth quarter as Concordia netted a man-up goal to extend their lead to 8-6. The two teams traded goals over the next few minutes before Loria notched a save for the Cardinals to make it 9-7 with five minutes remaining. Concordia added three unanswered goals in the closing minutes for the 12-7 final.
The Cardinals were led by Andrew Simmons, who tallied four goals and an assist. Spencer Guppy finished with a hat trick, while Ross Preston dished out a trio of assists. Joseph Loria made 12 saves between the pipes in the win.
Nick Sheaffer led the way for Webber with three goals, while Jeremiah Loo chipped in two goals and a pair of assists. Israel Miranda went 8-9 on faceoffs with four ground balls, while Liam Murphy and Luke Secreti combined for seven saves.
The victory propels Concordia into the semifinals, where they are set to face #1 Keiser (Fla.), who won their quarterfinal game earlier today. The next round is scheduled for May 8 at 3 p.m. ET at Memorial Stadium as the quest for the championship title continues.
