Topeka to Host Bowling National Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 2019 NAIA Men’s and Women’s Bowling National Invitationals will be hosted by Visit Topeka on March 28-30, 2019 and will be held at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka, Kan.

“The NAIA is excited to showcase bowling alongside Visit Topeka.,” said Jim Carr, NAIA president and CEO. “I am confident that Visit Topeka will set the bar high for future hosts in creating an outstanding atmosphere and student-athlete experience this spring.”

Bowling is in its second year of invitational status in the NAIA. Previously bowling was classified as an emerging sport and is on track to become a championship sport in the near future.

“Visit Topeka is thrilled to host the NAIA 2019 Bowling Invitationals,” said Mike Bell from Visit Topeka. “We are honored to be a part of the current momentum surrounding bowling and pleased to see it ascend to invitational sport status.”

The NAIA bowling season typically begins in September and closes in March at the invitational.

Each invitational will consist of 12 teams that will compete in six four-game Baker sets on the first day of competition. The remainder of the invitational will be a single-elimination, best-of-five match play with the top four teams from each gender getting a bye.

”To us, this is an honor to host, but it’s also a great opportunity to show why the relationship with Visit Topeka will also showcase Topeka and its hospitality for events like this,” said Gerry Keslar, owner of West Ridge Lanes. “The event will bring the best NAIA teams in the country to Topeka to determine their champions and we plan to make this an event they never forget.”

Topeka has been host to two other NAIA Championships. In 1988, Topeka hosted the women’s volleyball championship and hosted the men’s wrestling championship from 2014-2017.

“Baker University is extremely excited to partner with Visit Topeka and the NAIA to host the second NAIA Bowling Championships," said Nate Houser, Baker (Kan.) athletics director. "It is a tremendous honor to be a part of the rapid growth of bowling within the NAIA. We are proud to play part in these championships.”

Currently, 45 schools sponsor varsity men’s bowling teams and 50 schools sponsor varsity women’s bowling teams.

The first-ever NAIA Invitational winners in 2017-18 were Pikeville (Ky.) on the women’s side and for the men former bowling member Webber International (Fla.).
