2020 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Qualifiers Revealed
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — [Bracket | Tickets] The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 32-team field for the 2020 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship on Wednesday. The 83rd Annual event takes place March 18-24 at Municipal Arena in downtown Kansas City, Mo.
The 2020 field consists of 13 automatic, 18 at-large berths and one host berth. Automatic qualification is given to conference regular-season champions, regular-season runners-up, tournament champions or tournament runners-up depending on the league. The NAIA Network (www.NAIANetwork.com) – the association’s official video streaming home – will broadcast the first 30 games leading up to the championship final on ESPN3. Qualifier Notes
- Clarke (Iowa), Menlo (Calif.) and Shawnee State (Ohio) are all making their first appearance in the championship field this season.
- No team will enter the national championship undefeated in 2020. The best record entering play is that of both Georgetown (Ky.) and Mid-America Christian (Okla.), both with a 30-2 record.
- 12 teams have made at least 10 appearances in the national championship field. Four of those have made 20 appearances or more.
- Georgetown (Ky.) leads all teams with 38 appearances in the national championship.
- The Sooner, the Mid-South and Golden State Athletic Conferences each have five representatives.
- Of the teams with at least one appearance in its history, Thomas More (Ky.) is snapping the longest drought. The new member of the Mid-South Conference returned to the NAIA and was last in the championship field in 1960. Providence (Mont.) has the second longest drought stemming back to 1971.
- There are 19 returning teams from the 2019 national championship.
- Of the teams in the 2020 field, eight have won a national title in their history. Georgetown leads that group with three, followed by Texas Wesleyan (2), Dalton State (Ga.) (1), Faulkner (Ala.) (1), John Brown (Ark.) (1), Loyola (La.) (1), Mid-America Christian (Okla.) (1) and Pikeville (Ky.) (1)
