Men's Basketball - Mid-America Christian (Okla.)

2019-20 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll – Poll 6 (February 26, 2020)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After keeping its grasp on the top spot last week, Georgetown (Ky.) suffered its second loss as Mid-America Christian (Okla.) ascended into the top spot in the sixth edition of the Top 25. The Evangels remained the last one-loss team in the nation as they became only the second team ranked No. 1 this season. As Georgetown dropped just one spot, LSU Shreveport (La.) jumped three spots into the No. 3 position with Dalton State (Ga.) and William Penn (Iowa) at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively.

Top 25 Highlights (historical information dates back to 2000)

  • Mid-America Christian garnered all nine first-place votes this week.
  • The Evangels returned to the No. 1 overall spot for the first time since October 25, 2016 in the preseason edition of the Top 25.
  • Georgetown was handed just its second loss of the season against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday. A pair of free throws with two second left for the Campbellsville Tigers were the difference in a 94-92 decision.
  • LSU Shreveport jumped from No. 6 to No. 3, signaling the largest jump in the top five this week. The Pilots earned an impressive 110-80 victory over conference rival LSU Alexandria (La.) on Saturday, four days after dropping 135 points in its highest offensive output of the season.
  • Dalton State put its setback against Martin Methodist (Tenn.) a week ago in the rear view after grabbing a pair of wins against Florida College and Brewton Parker (Ga.). The Roadrunners have a critical game against No. 8-ranked Faulkner (Ala.) on Thursday.
  • After an absence from the top five, William Penn re-joined the group with wins over Central Methodist (Mo.) and Baker (Kan.) last week. The Statesmen will wrap-up the regular season this week with a home game against Mount Mercy (Iowa) today and road tilt with Peru State (Neb.) on Saturday.
  • Menlo (Calif.) made the biggest jump this week, up four spots to No. 16.
  • Park (Mo.) is the lone newcomer this week at No. 23. The Pirates grabbed perhaps their biggest win of the season over then-No. 21 Central Baptist (Ark.) 61-57 last week.
  • Former member Mountain State (W.Va.) owns the most No. 1-rankings with 48, followed by Robert Morris (Ill.) (24) and Georgetown (Ky.) (23). LSU Alexandria is next on the list with 16 while former NAIA member Concordia (Calif.) is at 12.
  • Georgetown (Ky.) owns the longest active streak in the Top 25, which is now at 76 consecutive polls.

Poll Methodology:

  • The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions.
  • The Top 25 is determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 30 points for each first-place vote, 29 for second-place and so on through the list.
  • The highest and lowest ranking for each team (a non-rating is considered a low ratings) is removed and the team’s ranking will be recalculated with an additional point added to each team for every ballot (including discounted ballots) that the teams appears on.
  • Teams that receive only one point in the ballot are not considered “receiving votes”
  • Frequency of polls occur bi-weekly. This policy was approved by the National Administrative Council (NAC) beginning in the 2016-17 academic season. This change will allow raters the opportunity to consider a larger body of work in between rating periods.
