THE IMPACT OF A CHARACTER-DRIVEN COACH:
Asheika Alexander's Story
Asheika pursued her basketball career at two NCAA schools, but was unable to find the right fit. While attending her second program, she found out she was pregnant. She found herself in a stressful situation, out of school, raising a newborn, and missing the game of basketball ... And then she found an understanding coach at Langston University.
"To have a relationship with a coach was more important to me because I needed someone that was going to understand that I was going to put my child first."
Character-Driven Coaching Program
The impact that a coach can have on the life of a student-athlete is invaluable. That's why all NAIA coaches are required to complete the Character-Driven Coaching program. The core of this program introduces new coaches to the NAIA Champions of Character® and five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership, while continuing to support and provide resources for all NAIA Coaches.
Character-Driven Coaching goals and Program Content:
- Deliver content through a practical coaching lens
- Incorporate snippets from a diverse array of players with practical suggestions for applying theory to practice
- Present options for next steps, allowing coaches to act on the content as soon as they complete the course
- Apply the NAIA’s Mind, Body, and Character philosophy
- Promote student-athlete health and wellness
- Explain basic NAIA rules
- Provide resources to build character
