Semifinal Recap of the 2023 NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - [BRACKET | SCHEDULE & SCORES] The 2023 NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship match is set after No. 1 Northwestern (Iowa) and No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan won their respective semifinals on Monday night in the Tyson Events Center. A new champion will be crowned on Tuesday night, as neither program has competed in the finals.
No. 1 Northwestern (Iowa) (31-2) def. No. 5 Viterbo (Wis.) (34-5), 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 25-27, 25-19)
- Northwestern (Iowa) started set one with an early lead and extended that lead to as many as eight points, but Viterbo hit its stride and went on a 9-3 run that put them within two points of NWC. The teams went back and forth as the V-Hawks fended off two set points until a kill off the hand of Alysen Dexter gave the Red Raiders the opening set 25-22.
- An early four point run set Northwestern up with the lead in the second set. The teams matched each other scoring run for scoring run until NWC put together an 8-2 run to take the lead in the match with a 25-17 set two win.
- NWC opened the third set with a 5-1 scoring run that quickly turned into the most highly contested set of the match with eight scoring ties. A late 9-3 run put Viterbo within two points of taking the set, which forced the Red Raiders into a time out. After the time out, NWC went on a three point run that would land them one point behind at 23-24. The V-Hawks found their footing once again as a kill off the hand of Martina McGrath sparked a 4-1 one run that led to Viterbo’s first win of the night as Grace Rohde landed the final kill in the 27-25 set four win for the V-Hawks.
- Viterbo opened set four with all the momentum and posted a 6-2 run. Northwestern battled back to tie the score at six and proceeded to take its first lead of the match at 8-7. The V-Hawks answered with a six point run sparked by Kenzie Winker that forced an NWC time out. After the time out, the Red Raiders went on an 11-4 run that gave them a two point lead. That two point lead gave way to a final 6-2 run that gave Northwestern the fourth set at 25-19.
- Jazlin De Haan led all scorers with 19 kills. Kenzie Winker and Martina McGrath of Viterbo followed with 17 kills apiece.
- De Haan and Winker also recorded double-digit digs to go along with their previously mentioned kills to complete a double-double with 10 and 13 digs, respectively.
- Kenidi McCabe of Viterbo and Olivia Granstra of NWC had impressive performances as liberos. The pair recorded 24 and 23 digs in the match, respectively.
- Zavyr Metzger of Northwestern led the defensive effort at the net for all blockers in the match as the only player to record double-digit blocks at 10.
- Northwestern advanced its win streak to 17.
No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan (37-0) def. No. 3 Eastern Oregon (34-2), 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 25-19)
- Indiana Wesleyan opened set one with the lead and thanks to a 9-1 run early in the set, Eastern Oregon couldn’t quite catch the Wildcats before IWU closed the opening set with a kill off the hand of Marissa Mullins at 25-23.
- EOU trailed for the first half of the set until they tied the score at 13 and captured its first lead of the match off of a 4-1 run sparked by Mylie Mills. The Wildcats answered with a three point run that landed a one point lead. The teams proceeded to go back and forth, trading the lead until the Mountaineers hit 20 and went on a 5-1 run after an IWU timeout to even the match score at one set apiece.
- An 11-1 start for Indiana Wesleyan led to a 25-14 set three win. Eastern Oregon tried to close the gap on that early deficit but couldn’t close it any more than nine points.
- After a lopsided third set, the teams matched each other point for point until a tie score of four led to a 7-3 scoring run for Indiana Wesleyan. That run provided the Wildcats the space they needed to hold off the Mountaineers as IWU captured the fourth set 25-19.
- Eva Joldersma of Indiana Wesleyan led all scorers with 17 kills. Teammate Marissa Mullins as well as Ashton Haughton and Keira Vaughn of Eastern Oregon, followed with 13 kills apiece.
- Cadee Notter led the defensive effort in the back row with 29 digs on the night.
- Indiana Wesleyan remains undefeated as they enter the championship match for the first time in program history.
