Day One of the 2023 NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship Pool Play

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – [BRACKET | SCHEDULE] Eight matches concluded on day one of the 2023 NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship presented by Marriot South Sioux City Riverfront and Riverside Technologies Inc., where nearly all top seeds in each pool won their respective matches.

 

Day 1 Highlights

  • Eight teams have not yet begun competition at the final site and will get their first taste of action on Thursday.
  • The highest and lowest seed in each pool played against each other on Wednesday.
  • Abbigail Porter of Indiana Wesleyan notched a new milestone with her 2,000th career assist during the teams match vs Oklahoma Wesleyan.
  • Northwestern (Iowa) (14), Indiana Wesleyan (34), Eastern Oregon (21), Park (Mo.) (28) and St. Thomas (Fla.) (22) maintained their respective win streaks with 10 or more wins on the season.
  • All but two matches were completed in three sets. The Northwestern vs St. Ambrose (Iowa) match went to four sets and the Corban vs St. Thomas match went to five sets.
  • All but one of the top seeds in each pool won their matches. St. Thomas (Fla.) upset the top seed in Pool G, Corban (Ore.), in the only five set match of the day.
  • Tournament Individual Stat Leaders that competed today (includes opening round stats)
    • Marissa Mullins of Indiana Wesleyan leads the tournament in blocks per set (2.67).
    • Jazlin De Haan of Northwestern (Iowa) leads the tournament in kills per set (6.33).
    • Martina McGrath of Viterbo (Wis.) leads the tournament in attack percentage (.611) (must have 10 or more total attempts).
  • Tournament Team Stat Leaders (includes opening round stats)
    • Viterbo leads the tournament in kills per set (17).
    • Viterbo leads the tournament in assists per set (16).
    • Valley City State (N.D.) leads the tournament in digs (85).
    • St. Thomas leads the tournament in digs per set (23.33).
    • St. Ambrose (Iowa) leads the tournament in total blocks (18).
    • Northwestern leads the tournament in blocks per set (4).
    • Northwestern, Eastern Oregon and Corban are tied for leading the tournament in service aces per set (2.67).

 

The NAIA Network – the association's official video-streaming home – will broadcast all matches, excluding the semifinal and championship matches, live at the 2023 NAIA Volleyball Championship final site in Sioux City, Iowa. The video platform, powered by Presto Sports, allows users access to live video, statistics and social interaction on a number of devices, including mobile. Single-day passes can be purchased for $9.95, while a pool play pass is $24.95 (November 29 – December 1) and a championship package is available at $39.95. The championship package includes all pool play and quarterfinal matches.
