MOBILE, Ala. – [Bracket | Schedule] The second round of the 2024 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship ended on Wednesday evening at the Mobile Tennis Center, with eight teams moving on to the quarterfinals scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. CT. Seven of the eight higher seeds prevailed as Wednesday’s action saw just one upset across round two.

Defending national champions (1) Georgia Gwinnett managed a 4-0 sweep in the first match played during this year’s tournament, while No. 2-seeded Keiser (Fla.) followed with a 4-0 win of its own.

Thursday’s lone upset came from the No. 8 v. No. 9 seeded match, with Loyola (La.) earning a 4-2 win over SCAD Savannah (Ga.).

 

Game Notes & Highlights

  • The top two seeds in this year’s tournament field cruised in second-round matches, advancing to the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon following a pair of shutouts.
  • Georgia Gwinnett defeated (16) St. Thomas (Fla.), seeing wins from No. 1, 5, and 6 singles after earning the doubles point to begin play. The Grizzlies move on in the tournament to face (9) Loyola on Thursday.
  • Last year’s runner-up Keiser earned a victory over (15) Indiana Wesleyan, advancing to face conference foe (7) Southeastern (Fla.) in the quarterfinals. The Seahawks are 2-0 against the Fire prior to the national tournament this season.
  • (4) Xavier (La.) joined the top two seeds with an early win, eliminating (13) William Carey (Miss.) in the process, 4-1. The Gold Nuggets advance to face (5) Middle Georgia State in the quarterfinals.
  • (3) Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) notched a win to advance in the tournament, ending (14) Dillard’s (La.) first-ever national tournament appearance in the second round with a 4-1 win. The Blue Raiders are set to face (6) Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon.
  • Tennessee Wesleyan used a three-set comeback from No. 1 singles to survive an upset scare from (11) LSU Alexandria (La.), eventually defeating the Generals in a hard-fought match, 4-3.
  • Middle Georgia State tallied a 4-1 win in the second round, defeating (12) Union (Ky.) in the process. The Knights managed to clinch the doubles point and wins from No. 2, 3, and 4 singles in the victory.
  • The 9th-seeded Wolf Pack notched the day’s only upset win, upsetting the Bees of (8) SCAD-Savannah, 4-2. Loyola is scheduled to face the top-seeded Grizzlies in the quarterfinals on Thursday, bidding for a historic upset in the quarterfinals.
  • Southeastern (Fla.) wrapped up the action on Wednesday with a 4-2 win over (10) Westcliff (Calif.), claiming wins in the No. 3, 4, and 5 singles matches along with the doubles win. The Fire will search for their first win in three tries against SUN Conference rival Keiser on Thursday.
  • All quarterfinal matches will take place at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala., scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. CT start.
