MOBILE, Ala. – (Bracket | Schedule) In its first appearance at the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championships, Westcliff (Calif.) pulled off the only upset as the first day of action came to a close.

 

Game Notes & Highlights

  • Higher seeds went 7-1 in round one.
  • Seven of the eight matches ended 4-0.
  • Teams that won the doubles point won seven of the eight matches.
  • No. 19 Westcliff defeated Union (Ky.), 4-2. The Warriors dropped the doubles point, before winning at No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles.
  • No. 16 Mobile picked up its first win at the National Championships since 2017 with a 4-0 win over No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan.
  • No. 15 Loyola (La.) picked up their second-ever win at the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship, winning 4-0 over No. 18 Holy Cross (Ind.).
  • No. 9 William Carey (Miss.) won a first round match for the third-straight year. The Crusaders took the doubles point, winning at No. 1 (6-0) and No. 2 (6-1) and won at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0), No. 4 (6-1, 6-0) and No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).
  • No. 12 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) picked up win No. 32 at the championship, sweeping Cornerstone (Mich.). The Blue Raiders are now 32-17 all-time at the championship.
  • Tennessee Wesleyan advanced to the second round for the third-consecutive year. The No. 13-seeded Bulldogs took care of No. 20 William Woods (Mo.), 4-0.
  • No. 10 St. Thomas (Fla.) dispatched No. 23 Ottawa (Kan.). 4-0. St. Thomas is now 2-1 all-time.
  • No. 11 Cumberlands (Ky.) took care of No. 22 Midland (Neb.), 4-0. The Patriots are now 5-1 in their last six first-round matches.
