Recap of the 2022 NAIA Women's Lacrosse Semifinals

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - [SCHEDULE | RESULTS | BRACKET] The top seeds, Benedictine (Kan.) and Lawrence Tech (Mich.) advance out of their respective semifinal on Thursday evening. 

In the 2021 championship, the teams faced each other in the quarterfinal round where LTU would win the game to advance to the semifinals. Benedictine most recently advanced to a title game in the final invitational in 2019. Lawrence Tech advanced to an invitational final as well in 2017. Neither team has won an invitational or championship title. 

No. 1 Lawrence Tech (Mich.) def. No. 4 Reinhardt (Mich.) 17-11 (Box Score) 

  • #1 Lawrence Tech scored five goals in both the first and fourth quarter to pull away from #4 Reinhardt 17-11 in the semifinals of the NAIA Tournament. 
  • Reinhardt won the opening draw control and on that possession, Anna-Marie Gazzo netted an unassisted goal 38 seconds into the game.   
  • Lawrence Tech evened the score two minutes later before the Blue Devils added two more goals to take a 3-1 advantage midway through the first quarter. 
  • The team traded goals twice to close out the quarter as Lawrence Tech took a 5-3 lead. 
  • The two teams opened the second quarter by trading goals.  Abbey Smetowski and Hannah Huebner tallied a goal for the Blue Devils to give them an 8-4 advantage at halftime. 
  • Lawrence Tech added two goals to open the third quarter, before Reinhardt netted four of the next five goals, including two from Mia Griswold to cut the deficit to 11-8. 
  • Just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, Sydney Robinson found Alaina Smythe in front of the cage for a goal.   
  • The Blue Devils had five different players net five of the next six goals to extend their lead to 17-9 with 4:35 remaining.  The Eagles added two goals in the closing minutes for the 17-11 final. 
  • Abby Barnewold recorded six points, while Gabi Mitchell and Abbey Smentowski both tallied five points apiece for the Blue Devils.  Anabella Acluche made 11 saves in the win, while Sydney Robinson scooped 10 draw controls. 
  • Gazzo led the way for Reinhardt with three goals as Mia Griswold added three points.  Morgan McGhee chipped in six draw controls and two goals.  Jessie Landers added seven saves. 

No. 6 Benedictine (Kan.) def. No. 7 SCAD (Ga.) 15-14 (Box Score) 

  • SCAD opened the game with back-to-back goals from Julia Luff and Keagan Plume to give the Bees the early 2-0 lead.   
  • Benedictine responded as Aiden McEnerney tallied a goal and an assist to even the score at 2-2 with 9:03 left in the first quarter.   
  • The two teams traded goals before Clare Ryan notched a goal and an assist to put the Ravens in front 5-3 after the opening period. 
  • Benedictine added two more goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter extending their lead to 7-3. 
  • SCAD responded with a man-up goal, which sparked four straight goals from Clarke Haas to even the score up at 7-7 with 7:27 remaining in the second quarter. 
  • Erica Odell put Benedictine back in front with 6:18 left as the Ravens added two more goals to take a 10-8 advantage into halftime. 
  • Benedictine scored three of the first four goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 13-9 lead five minutes into the third period. 
  • SCAD added a goal in the final minute of the third as Sophia Milia dished out a pair of assists to pull them within a goal at 13-12 with 9:51 left.    
  • After the two teams traded goals, Hass netted the equalizer for SCAD tying the game at 14-14 with 3:14 remaining.   
  • The Ravens won the next draw control and on the ensuing possession, Natalie Wechter found McEnerney for the game-winning goal with 2:23 left. 
  • Ryan and McEnerney led the way for Benedictine with four goals and two assists each, while Odell finished with two points and ten draw controls. 
  • Haas led the way for SCAD with five goals, while Milia dished out five assists.  Tracy Richards made nine saves between the pipes. 

 

Benedictine advances to the championship game against Lawrence Tech on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST.
