Day 1 of the 2022 NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship

BROOKINGS, S.D. –  The NAIA Men's  Indoor Track & Field National Championships returned to Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex for the third time in four years on the campus of South Dakota State, hosted by Dakota State (S.D.). 

  • The 57th annual running of the men’s indoor track & field national meet kicked off with one individual long-distance running event, three relays running their semifinals as well as the first events of the heptathlon.   
  • TJ Davis of Eastern Oregon took the lead after four events in the heptathlon with an even 3,000 points.  He took first in the long jump and shot put.  He also finished fourth in both 60-meter dash and high jump. 
  • The final three events of the heptathlon will start at 10 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles, followed by the pole vault and the 1000-meter run. 
  • Zouhair Talbi of Oklahoma City is one step closer to repeating the 5000-meter run title after winning the first heat in 14:43.29.  His teammate Shimales Abebe also advanced to the final after finishing second in 14:47.66. 
  • Indiana Wesleyan edged Siena Heights (Mich.) in the 4x800-meter relay first heat, separately by just .13 seconds.  Both teams advanced to the finals on Friday at 5:35 p.m. 
  • Three teams finished by .63 seconds difference in an exciting 4x800-meter relay second heat. Westmont (Calif.) claimed the fastest time overall in 7:39.30, while Dordt (Iowa) was second in 7:39.48 followed by Grace (Ind.) in 7:39.93. 
  • Life (Ga.) edged Indiana Tech by .25 seconds to register the fastest time in the 4x400-meter relay semifinals.  Indiana Tech – who won the 4x400-meter relay national title last season – won the first heat, while Life (Ga.) won the second heat. 
  • The day wrapped up with Huntington (Ind.) taking the fastest time in the distance medley relay.  They finished with a time of 9:59.58.   

The national championships continue Friday with the continuation of the men’s heptathlon. The men’s 3000-meter walk is set to kick off at 11:25 a.m. 

The men’s weight throw starts the field events at 12 p.m. Friday, followed by men’s high jump at 2 p.m., and men’s long jump at 4 p.m. 

Numerous semifinals running events are set for 12:20 p.m. with the men’s 1-mile run.  The 4 x 800-meter relay national final is scheduled to conclude the second day of the national meet at 5:35 p.m.
