Mobile, Ala. – (Bracket | Schedule) Three upsets highlighted day one of the 2023 NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship.
Game Notes & Highlights
- Oakland City makes history as they become the first No. 21-seed to ever win a match at the NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship. Additionally, the Mighty Oaks won their first match as a program. Oakland City defeated Cumberland (Tenn.), 4-1.
- No. 9 Westcliff (Calif.) made history themselves as they picked up their first-ever National Championship win in their first appearance. The Warriors knocked off Southwestern, 4-0.
- No. 10 Middle Georgia State handled No. 23 Midland (Neb.), 4-0. The Knights won the doubles point and three singles matches – No. 1, 2 and 3.
- No. 11 Cumberlands (Ky.) eliminated No. 22 Mobile (Ala.), 4-2. This is the second-straight year the Patriots defeated Mobile in the first round.
- McPherson (Kan.) defeated Ave Maria (Fla.) in a 20 over 13 upset. The Bulldogs, 4-1 and earned their first tournament win since 2018.
- No. 14 Coastal Georgia took care of business against Holy Cross (Ind.), 4-1. This marks the second-straight round one vitcotry for the Mariners.
- No. 17 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) won in the first round for the first time since 2017 as they knocked off No. 16 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 4-2.
- No. 15 St. Thomas ended a 12 year winless streak at the NAIA Championships with a 4-2 win over No. 18 Grace (Ind.).
- The higher seed went 5-3 in round one.
