St. Ambrose (Iowa) Claims First Cheer Red Banner with Record Score

YPSILANTI, Mich. – St. Ambrose (Iowa) captured the double Saturday, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center on the campus of Eastern Michigan. After winning the NAIA Dance National Championship in the morning, the Bees won their first NAIA Cheer national title in the evening session with an NAIA record score of 95.51 points.

It’s the first time in the seven year history of the NAIA Cheer and Dance National Championship that the same school has won both competitions in the same year.

Finals Performance Highlights

  • St. Ambrose became the fifth different national champion over the first six competitions held — one was canceled due to COVID-19. The Bees finished runner-up in 2021 and placed third in 2019 and 2022.
  • The Bees record score of 95.51 points topped the previous highest nationals score of 93.70 points that was set by Xavier (La.) last season.
  • Site hosts Concordia (Mich.) rose two spots from fourth to second on the final day with a finals performance score of 91.50, to bump its overall score to 90.76.
  • The battle for third place was decided by .37 points as Oklahoma City surpassed Dickinson State (N.D.), who held second place after the preliminary round on Friday.
  • Fifth through 10th place was tightly compact with six teams within roughly three points of each other. Midland (Neb.) was best of the pack with a score of 86.97 to finish inside the Top Five.
  • Tennessee Southern made the biggest improvement on Day 2, moving up from 13th place to eighth with an overall score of 85.37.
  • All 15 teams finished with team scores above 81 points, something that has never been done before in the history of the NAIA Cheer National Championship.
  • St. Ambrose, Midland, Cumberlands (Ky.), Mobile (Ala.) and Grand View (Iowa) did not receive any deductions.
  • Friday's preliminary performance accounted for 25% of their total, with the finals on Saturday comprising the other 75%.
